Adbrite, adbrite !
Adbrite scores a third round of investment from Sequoia capital and Artis Management. The interesting part is that while Adbrite is ok, and is one of the last few places that a Bittorrent site can get advertising to help cover costs. All is not well in the Adbrite universe. Even through we use them, the payouts are pathetic, but then the costs to use the service are also some of the best on the internet.
You have to take the good with the bad, people pay little money for an ad, you get little money for having the ad on your website.
You can get a 30-day text link ad for 30 cents on some sites. So if you are buying ads, this is the place to go, where you’re advertising dollars will so much further. If you are a person who uses the ads, you will make more money from Google, and you cannot put Google ads on a Bittorrent tracker site.
Adbrite was started by Phillip “Pud” Kaplan the person who brought us F*ck’d Company, and internal memo’s. Both iconic places for Web 1.0 dot com boom information, and flame out information. Both F’d Company and Internal Memo’s have been down for a while, and some of his other experiments in social networking have ended very flat, if not something that would get him trouble. With him on this is Gidon Wise, and since 2002, they have been slowly growing their company.
The cool part about Adbrite is that they are not pretentious, and you have the opportunity to reject ads for your sites, which is good when someone wants to sell a pile of porn ads to you, even though you have specified no porn.
It is good to see that they will be around for a while longer, as finding anyone that will service ads on a Bittorrent web site, or even some of the more racy/edgy sites (that violate Google or Yahoo TOS).
